Iraq’s War Disfigured Babies
By Afif Sarhan, IOL Correspondent

In new Iraq, women like Leila Omar Wassin are heart-broken giving birth to babies born malformed because of the deadly substances years of war have sown in their bodies. “My first baby died after he was born without legs and the second one died few days ago because his spinal cord was exposed and his head was too big,” the 36-old woman told IslamOnline.net. Wassim is one of the victims of the massive bombing of Fallujah in 2004, when the US army admittedly us ed depleted uranium munitions, which contain low-level radioactive waste. Doctors told Wassim the restricted weapon sowed her body with lethal material that caused her children’s birth defects and the subsequent deaths. “If I knew my body was sick, I wouldn’t have tried to bring a new life to the world.” Experts affirm that many like Wassim, especially in areas severely-hit by radioactive material over the years, suffer the same pain…

by Ahmad Jaradat, Alternative Information Center (AIC)

Last week, the Israeli courts rejected a Palestinian appeal against a military order of confiscation of land issued one year ago. This order confiscates 2000 dunam (1 dunam= 1000 m²) belonging to nine Palestinian families in the villages of al-Khader and Artas in the south of Bethlehem District, to the north of the settlement of Efrat. The families affected appealed to the Israeli courts in Jerusalem through hu man rights organizations, but unfortunately only one of the nine appeals was accepted. According to sources, there are plans to expand the settlement of Efrat toward the north and northwest, encroaching ever closer to the two villages and to the city of Bethlehem…

Al-Kurd Family Tent Destroyed for Fifth Time by Jerusalem Municipality
The Alternative Information Center (AIC)

The struggle continues for the al-Kurd family as their tent was destroyed for the fifth time yesterday morning (22 February 2008) by Israeli forces. The family’s tent was hauled away in a truck and the electric company came to cut the electricity that the family had been using. The al-Kurd family was left with their few belongings strewn about the area near where the tent had previously been erected. Once the Is raeli authorities left the scene, the family along with activists began the cleanup process. Many of the belongings were covered with tarps to protect them from the light rain that had been falling throughout the morning. Within the hour, a new, smaller, tent was brought out and the family, along with activists and supporters, began setting up the new tent…

Gazans fear Fatah-Hamas split could sabotage Gaza reconstruction
Amira Hass

An apolitical group of community activists, businessmen and academics in the Gaza Strip is worried that Fatah-Hamas rivalries will undermine the Strip’s reconstruction. Both Fatah, which controls the West Bank, and Hamas, which controls Gaza, have announced separate plans to repair the damages of last month’s Israeli operation in Gaza. The new association plans to urge them to either form a joint leadership for the reconstruction effort or establi sh a steering committee comprised of “respected, professional and noncorrupt community representatives” to oversee the work…

Be fair to Hamas, Mr Obama
STUART LITTLEWOOD

Can it be true? This week in the High Court in London, lawyers acting for an independent Palestinian organization will start proceedings against the British government. They seek a judicial review of policy decisions that have brought the UK’s relations with Israel into conflict with international law. “The UK has clear international law obligations to do something effective to stop Israel’s attacks on Palestinian civilians,” says Phil Shiner who leads the case…
