The New American Century Has Not Been Cancelled
Steve Hynd

Anyone who thought the neoconservative project for a new American hegemony was finally cancelled when Obama came to power, promising to change Bush’s failed course in Iraq and Afghanistan, has by now had their hopes dashed. The Obama administration has proven itself just as inclined to interventionism and picking up the White Man’s Burden as Dubya ever was, albeit with a less coarse and selfish face. Obama has proven his neoliberal credentials with his strategy fo r escalation in Afghanistan: a decade-or-two continuation and expansion of Bush’s policy there which has no direction, no benchmarks, no clearly defined end-point, no exit ramps and no truth-telling about the costs…

If Only They Could See
Mohammed Omer

Mohammed Al-Sheikh Yousef could save his eyesight if only he could cross the border out of Gaza. He was denied a permit by Israel; he got one from Egypt, but not for someone to accompany him. And he can’t go on his own because he cannot see very well. “If Mohammed does not get out of Gaza for medical treatment within the next 14 days, he may totally lose his eyesight and be blind for life,” Dr. Mawia Hasaneen, head of the ambulance and emergency service for Gaza hospitals told IPS in a telephone interview. “In the past few weeks we have received 150 appeals from people in Gaza who are in need of urgent medical care,” says Ran Yaron from Physicians for Human Rights, a human rights group in Israel that campaigns on behalf of Palestinian patients to obtain exit permits for healthcare…

Gaza & Zionism
Marcy Newman, body on the line

Dr. Mads Gilbert was on grit tv with Laura Flanders this week. The interview is excellent on a number of levels–for his specificity about war crimes he witnessed by Israeli terrorists while working in al Shifa hospital in Gaza, for his analysis of the situation on the political level. I can never get enough listening to him speak. One of the points he raises here is in relation to the fact that during world war ii so little of the world did anything to stop nazi germany even w hile they knew what was happening and he links this to the world watching and refusing to intervene in the massacres in Gaza..

56% in FATA see Afghan Taliban as ‘heroes’: survey
Daily Times

Exactly 56 percent respondents described Afghanistan’s Taliban as “Islamic heroes fighting western occupation” in a survey conducted by Community Appraisal and Motivation Programme (CAMP) with the help of the British High Commission in Islamabad. A paltry 12.1 percent called them “a terrorist group”. More than 54 percent respondents said they were “dissatisfied with life” in FATA in general. The number of satisfied people stood at 18.15 percent, according to t he survey, and 17.5 percent said they were neither satisfied nor dissatisfied…

US interpreter who witnessed torture in Iraq shot herself with service rifle
David Randall

It is possible that one of the victims of the United States’ torture policy is a young, devout Mormon woman from Arizona called Alyssa Peterson. She was a soldier who not only saw the rough interrogation methods that the US military used on Iraqi prisoners, but was deeply troubled by them. Some weeks after formally protesting about them to her superiors, and asking to be reassigned, she took her gun and killed herself. The cause of her death was kept secret for two years, and the mystery of what Peterson witnessed, and the content of the notes she made, still goes on…

GAZA: Efforts to track communicable diseases in Gaza
IRIN news

UN agencies and the health ministry in Gaza are working to strengthen communicable disease surveillance systems in Gaza, in light of the fact that leaking sewage may be contaminating drinking water. The fragile water and sewage network was damaged during the recent 23-day Israeli offensive in Gaza, increasing public health risks, according to a recent report by the Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) cluster, entitled A Brief Outline of the Sewage Infrastruct ure and Public Health Risks in the Gaza Strip for the World Health Organization (WHO)…

Situation of children in Gaza remains precarious 100 days after end of conflict
UNICEF

More than three months after the cessation of hostilities in Gaza, the Israeli blockade and inter-Palestinian tension are hampering recovery efforts. “Although the conflict ended 100 days ago, children in Gaza continue to suffer, both physically and psychologically,” said Patricia McPhillips, UNICEF Special Representative to the occupied Palestinian territory. “It is critical that supplies and materials needed for recovery and rehabilit ation are allowed in.” Ten per cent of the population in Gaza remains without electricity and nine per cent with little access to safe water…

The issue of Racism between Zionism and the Apartheid ideology
Salim Nazzal

This is a quick and generalized paper, which gives evidences of which might explain why the Zionist regime has been more capable of resisting the pressures of the culture of human rights and self determination while the apartheid regimes have vanished. Despite the similarities between the white Racist regime, in earlier South Africa and those of the Zionist regime, in terms of the oppressive policy against the natives, there are seven major differ ences: the first, white Europeans immigrated to Africa without a prior plan to the country and to the natives. Their immigration was rather spontaneous, guided by wide colonial thought rather than of a well theorized racist ideology decided from before. The construction of the racist regime was done through a process in the history of their domination there. Zionists arrived in Palestine from day one armed with comprehensible ideology, unambiguous policy, from which its aims were to transfer Palestinians…

Hamas-Fatah dialogue in Cairo postponed to mid-May
Ma’an News

The Palestinian national dialogue session between Hamas and Fatah has been delayed until mid-May, Reuters reported on Tuesday. The talks had started on Monday, but on Tuesday it was announced that the parties will break to examine new Egyptian proposals on a range of controversial topics. Senior Hamas leader and negotiator Mahmoud Zahhar said on Tuesday that talks would resume either 16 or 17 May. He told Reuters that the dialogue session “has been postponed in order for both delegations to go back to their leadership and discuss Egyptian suggestions and ideas.”..

SIXTY ONE YEARS OF ISRAELI (IN)DEPENDENCE
Desertpeace

At sundown tonight Israelis will mark the 61st anniversary of the founding funding of their state. Often we hear university students living away from home referring to their parents as ‘the rents’. Why? Simply because it is usually the parents that foot the bill for their accommodations. In many cases the students themselves could not make it on their own. So is the case with Israel, they have been funded from abroad for the past 61 years. They have n ever attempted to even try making it on their own. From day one they have stolen, lied, and killed to maintain what they call their own. From day one their supporters were aware of this but continued to pour in billions of dollars annually…
